At their country school north of Sentinel Butte, North Dakota, their mom, the teacher, baked potatoes in the ash pan of the stove, and the kids could smell them for an hour before lunch. In Part 2, sisters Mert Popiel and Rella Abernethy take me through the 1949 blizzard that kept Mert in town from New Year's until Easter, World War II ration books and blackouts, a wedding party that showed up smelling like prairie fire smoke, and a priest reading his prayers by headlight outside Medora. As their mom always told them, "Education is something they can't take away from you."
