With no electricity on the farm north of Sentinel Butte, North Dakota, Mom made chocolate milk and lowered it down the well in a pail to get it cold. Sisters Mert Popiel, 92, and Rella Abernethy, 88, were both born upstairs over the grocery store in Sentinel Butte and grew up six kids to a three-room house near Westerheim. They tell me about hot bricks wrapped in towels for buggy rides, flying down hills on an old buggy frame, half-court girls' basketball in skirts, and how Mert got her nickname. And wait until you hear the one joke their quiet dad always told.
